Understanding Higher Education in Further Education Colleges

This summary presents the main findings from research undertaken on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to understand the current nature of higher education in further education colleges in England.

The evidence drawn together provides a cross-sectional picture of higher education provision and student participation in further education colleges, including the perspectives and experiences of institutional managers, students and employers. Although the research is focused on higher education in further education institutions, the study takes account of comparisons between undergraduate and higher-level education in the further education and higher education sectors.

The study was carried out between March 2011 and March 2012.
