Bath Spa's 'Little Blue Book'

Bath Spa Careers comprises an integrated team of careers consultants and graduate opportunities specialists, an enterprise and employer liaison team (incorporating entrepreneurship, placements and mentoring) and the university's Job Shop. It has also played the lead role in drawing together an ever-expanding programme of co-curricular experiences designed to enrich the student experience: from modern language classes and speed-networking events, to an alumni mentoring scheme and business start-up and freelance support.

Traditional approach

Presented with the challenge of how best to convey this wide array of opportunities to students - whilst emphasising the importance and benefits of participation each could bring - the team opted to augment its online marketing and career development tools with a more traditional, offline, approach through a printed publication to be distributed to every undergraduate student at Bath Spa University in the 2011/12 academic year.

Adam Powell, Head of Employability, said:

"Designed to be tactile, accessible and engaging, a copy of The Little Blue Book: An essential guide to planning your future measures a handy 'pop-it-in-your-bag' size of 170mm x 170mm, with a tactile magnetic closure and durable wrap. The publication features three sections ('Ignite', 'Engage', 'Launch'), each supporting students at different stages of their career planning. Its 70 pages is packed full of advice, useful self-assessment tools and quotations from both employers and recent graduates - as well as signposting to the range of support and services available to students across the university.

Since beginning distribution, hugely positive feedback has been received from all quarters including students, academic staff and the university's Board of Governors, with teaching staff incorporating selected content within the curriculum and the item being a much sought-after giveaway to drive footfall to the careers centre."

The Little Blue Book was produced thanks to the support of the South West ERDF Competitiveness and Employment Programme.
