Narrative Approaches and HE Guidance Practice, Newcastle upon Tyne

    This AGCAS NE Regional Training day, led by Peter Beven, is for staff involved in guidance and supporting individuals with life choices and career decision making in a Higher Education setting.

    By the end of the programme, participants will:

    - Be able to describe the principles of Narrative Approaches and how they might apply them to their work with students
    - Understand several of the tactics derived from research and practice from White and Epston, Vance Peavy, Hazel Reid and others.
    - Have practised using tactics derived from Narrative ideas through case studies’ practice.
    - Understand situations where narrative approaches may be particularly appropriate as a tool within their existing approach to guidance.

    Peter is an experienced tutor and researcher in the Guidance and Counselling area of work. He is Director of Teaching and Learning in the Department of Social Work, Education and Community Wellbeing of Northumbria University and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His research interests include the use of a range of different approaches to support clients in self-assessment, learning and decision-making.

    As a former Careers Adviser he is interested in guidance interventions with a potential to enhance practice. Peter has delivered training sessions for a wide range of organisations, in the public and private sectors, both in the UK and internationally.

    For the past ten years Peter has offered Narrative training sessions to a range of professional groups, in the UK and abroad including Connexions Personal Advisers in England, Career Advisers in Northern Ireland and Wales, Adult Guidance workers, Learning Mentors, Social Workers, Youth Workers, Teachers and Support workers in a range of settings.
