Chester graduates offered a head start

The Graduate Head Start (GHS) programme set up by the University of Chester's Careers and Employability Department guides and supports recent graduates who have not yet found employment or embarked upon their career path. The Open University: Fees 2012-13

In July, The Open University (OU) announced that it had set a new fee level for new students in England starting after 1 September 2012. The new fee is £5,000 for a full-time year (120 credits), but as most OU students study part time, this figure will be scaled down in proportion to the intensity of their study.

Transfer of AGCAS qualifications to Warwick

AGCAS is delighted to announce that The University of Warwick has become the host institution for the AGCAS Career Education, Information and Guidance in HE (CEIGHE) qualifications. From 1 August 2010 the AGCAS qualifications (at Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and MA level) will all be cared for by The University of Warwick’s Centre for Lifelong Learning (CLL).


Case studies highlight award-winning work

A series of case studies has been produced to showcase the winning projects and initiatives recently commended as part of the AGCAS Awards for Excellence 2011.

The case studies have been compiled using the original submissions received from each AGCAS member service. They are intended to encourage and share good practice amongst HE careers professionals to help promote excellence in careers and employability work.

Hull targets SMEs for internships

The University of Hull Careers Service has been encouraging the region's smaller businesses to employ graduates on an internship basis. As a result, Hull's allocation of internships to small businesses exceeded their target by over 600%, with internships allocated over a range of industry sectors.

AGR invites careers service award nominations

The Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) is inviting higher education careers and employability services, which are members of AGR, to nominate themselves for a new award. The award, which is called Preparation for Work by Higher Education, recognises the contribution of university careers services in preparing students to succeed in the world of work. It is given to higher education institutions for outstanding commitment to improving the employability and long-term career success of their graduates.

'Graduate labour market holding up' AGCAS survey

More employers are looking for graduates according to university careers and employability professionals. Responding to the regular vacancy survey carried out by the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS), 87.5% of heads of careers services said that in their experience the graduate labour market was more buoyant (50%) or the same (37.5%) in the quarter ending 31 December 2011 compared to the same period in 2010.

Mentoring boosts employability at Birmingham City University

Birmingham City University (BCU) Careers Service has developed two high-quality mentoring programmes to give students a real-life insight into the world of work and enhance their employability. The programmes were shortlisted for both the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards and the AGCAS Awards for Excellence. 

Employability at the heart of University of Derby development

The careers team at the University of Derby is committed to providing a holistic service to their student body, which, like other Million+ institutions, includes students from a broad spectrum of backgrounds undertaking full time, part time and distance learning courses. New University of Bolton initiative improves commercial awareness

The careers service at the University of Bolton is working with Gradcore to deliver an innovative four-day programme aimed at final year students and graduates. The programme aims to improve the employability of students and grow links with employers and local businesses.

Coventry University develops Add+vantage employability programme

Coventry has one of the biggest university employability initiatives in the country, with more than 11,000 students taking one 10-credit employability module in each year of study. The Add+vantage Scheme is centrally coordinated by the Careers and Employability Service and involves all schools, faculties and other departments and employers. 

Developing employable Gloucestershire graduates

Jobs On Campus for Newcastle students

In November 2011, Newcastle University launched the Jobs On Campus (JobsOC) scheme to provide an on-campus jobs agency whereby students can fill temporary positions in and around the university as opposed to acquiring staff through a local recruitment agency. There are clear signs that the scheme is proving to be a great success - not just for the students, but employers and the university as a whole.

Grown in Lancaster: industrial placements

Interest in courses with an integral placement has risen rapidly at Lancaster University Management School (LUMS). As the numbers have grown, staff at LMUS have adopted a much more structured approach to the support and opportunities offered to industrial placement students, which has become a unique selling point of these particular degree programmes. 

Aston's vision: placements on every course

In 2010 and 2011, Aston University had the highest percentage of all UK universities with students enrolled on courses involving integrated sandwich placements or year abroad programmes. Their ambition is to offer placements as part of every course by 2020.

Regent's College international degree placements 'key building block'

The European Business School London (EBSL), part of Regent's College London, offers compulsory 36-week placements as part of two international degree programmes. Both the BA (Hons) in International Business (BAIB) and the BA (Hons) in International Events Management (BAIEM) are unique in requiring students to complete placements in either the vacation periods, or part-time alongside their studies. This integral component of the degree ensures students graduate with the much sought-after skills employers are looking for, while avoiding any lengthening of the study period. 

Careers service engagement with medium-sized enterprises

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has established a working group to look at HE engagement with medium-sized enterprises (MSEs). An academic from The University of Edinburgh Business School is leading a strand of this work, looking at the talent pipeline for MSEs.

Emily Timson, Business Placements Manager at The York Management School, has completed a research report exploring the challenges faced by students pursuing 12-month work placements. The aim of the research was to gain an in-depth understanding of what motivates students - and what stops them from applying for placements.

York placements scheme: from zero to hero

The York Management School at The University of York has committed to enhancing student employability by introducing a placement year across all undergraduate degrees, which includes compulsory placement lectures as part of the timetable. The Management Team's focus is not only to produce highly academic students, but to embed an employability mindset into them from day one.

Yorkshire Universities' Graduate Internship Scheme

Huddersfield is one of four Yorkshire institutions working in conjunction with Yorkshire Universities and Graduates Yorkshire to offer internal internships to its own graduates. Alongside Leeds Metropolitan, Bradford and York St John, the scheme offers 12 weeks' work experience to 2010 and 2011 leavers in a role linked to a graduate profession.

University of Derby: Careers management research project
The Wilson Review recommendations suggest that careers and employability support becomes a recognised part of the ongoing student experience rather than an aspect that captures the attention of students in their final year. The University of Derby has a wide range of employability activities that students can participate in from year one, but the challenge faced is to attract more students to participate in the activities that are offered.

Queen Mary, University of London: Local work experience scheme

QM Projects, run by Queen Mary Careers, part of The Careers Group, University of London, provides its students with challenging projects in local charities. The aim is to give the student an opportunity to gain experience in their area of career interest while sharing the knowledge they've gained from their course with a local charity in need of a particular skill set. At the end of their three month project, the student is able to demonstrate initiative and give a clear, positive outcome of this work on their CV.

Queen Mary, University of London: Start Up Stand Up

Start Up Stand Up, held in May 2012, was a joint event coordinated by the QM Entrepreneurship Society and Queen Mary Careers, part of the Careers Group, University of London, and supported by the National Association of College & University Entrepreneurs (NACUE). The event was structured like a comedy club and aimed at inspiring students to consider working in an SME or starting their own business.

Business Networking: Developing employability skills through forum theatre
The Careers Service at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) are continuing to support and promote the highly successful business networking events that were developed through PMI2 funding. The most recent business networking events have been delivered to master’s students in the School of Health and Life Sciences and to MBA students.

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU): BIO Employability Exit (BEE) Initiative
The Division of BIO within the School of Health and Life Sciences and GCU Careers Service have created the BEE Initiative. This initiative addresses employment rates for international MSc students within biological and biomedical sciences (BIO) with an emphasis on improving career prospects both locally, globally and in their home country. It aims to empower graduates to understand the value of transferable 21st century graduate attributes, develop career management skills and raise confidence in dealing with employers.

Careers services respond to Wilson Review

AGCAS welcomes the government's response to the Wilson Review. In its response the government has announced that it will provide some seed corn funding to support AGR and AGCAS to work in partnership on the implementation of the Wilson review recommendations aimed at AGR and AGCAS.

Newcastle University develops enterprising graduates and promotes employment in SMEs

HE careers service wins AGR Blue Ribbon Award

The University of Exeter has scooped two prizes at the 2012 Association of Graduate Recruiters' (AGR) annual awards ceremony. It won the Graduate Development Award and then beat the other category winners to the Blue Ribbon Award, presented to the best entrant overall. Exeter is the first higher education institution to win this prestigious award, which was given in recognition of the university's commitment to preparing students for the demands of working life in the 21st century.

MyPostgradApps - a Postgraduate Application Management Tool helping students through the cloud

Potential postgraduates repeatedly tell us, at postgraduate fairs, and through our websites PostgraduateStudentships and MastersCompare, that they find keeping track of multiple postgraduate applications daunting and often confusing, especially if they are used to the centralised undergraduate application system. Listening to students talk about their frustration at a student panel we ran led us to develop MyPostgradApps, our free online tool that allows students to manage their postgraduate applications, funding applications and open day bookings, all together in one place. MyPostgradApps was launched in autumn 2012 and is actively used by more than 800 students (and rising!) every day to manage their applications.

Give a little, gain a lot! The University of Winchester’s accredited volunteering module

During the 2011-12 academic year, The University of Winchester offered an exciting new module to undergraduate students, giving them the opportunity to complete a voluntary placement within the charitable sector for academic credit. The main aims of the module are to provide students with the opportunity to acquire and develop a new range of skills whilst making a positive contribution to the local community, and at the same time learn about the voluntary sector as an employment prospect. The volunteering module provides a 'work placement' experience for those students studying programmes which do not have a vocational focus.

New Careers, Study Skills and Employability Zone at the University of Worcester

The eagerly awaited opening of the new city centre library in partnership with the County Council has led to the development of an exciting new campus-based Students' Centre on the site of the former library. University of Chichester launches new international student co-mentoring scheme

The University of Chichester will be launching a new initiative for home and international students from January 2013. This scheme will give students the opportunity to work collaboratively and co-tutor each other in language skills and cultural awareness.

Careers and placement teams working together for postgrads at University College Birmingham

University College Birmingham's MSc and Postgraduate Diploma awards in Hospitality and Tourism have proved to be popular with international students. However, the economic downturn was seriously impacting the opportunities available for this group of students to complete a full-time, six month placement module. A revalidation of the programme, amending the optional placement requirement to three-to-six months part or full time, has given students a much wider range of opportunities through which to fulfil the placement requirement, including that of summer vacation work.

Loaves and fishes - internship programme at York St John University

Careers services within smaller institutions often have to be creative to ensure that their students have access to similar opportunities to those available in larger institutions. The recent implementation of a graduate internships project at York St John University provides an example. 

AGR university awards 2015: nominate your service

The Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) is inviting higher education careers and employability services, which are members of AGR, to nominate themselves for the AGR Graduate Development Awards 2015. There are two university award categories: Preparation for work by Higher Education – Single Initiative and Preparation for work by Higher Education – Overall Strategy.

Plymouth University Careers Service wins national enterprise award

Plymouth University Careers Service has won the Enterprise Champion Award at the National Enterprise Education Awards. In partnership with Working Knowledge, Plymouth University has used FLUX, an enterprise challenge for students, as a way of engaging students in the possibility of setting up their own business, while at the same time using FLUX events to develop the employability skills of their students. Working in teams of four to six, students have half a day to create a business idea before presenting it to a panel of business 'dragons'.

Making the Most of Masters: Collaboration in Scotland

Making the Most of Masters (MMM) is a cross-university collaboration between the universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Stirling funded by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC). The aim is to improve cooperation between employers and universities by providing opportunities for master's students to undertake work-based dissertation projects. The three universities are sharing the same strategic approach and delivery systems, while accommodating practices at each institution.  

University of Birmingham - a strategic commitment to employability

In 2010, the University of Birmingham started a year-long process of creating an institutional employability strategy. The process involved robust and objective appraisals of existing employability provision, including evaluation by an external consultant, an internal review focusing on value for money, and impact measurement and assessments on whether provision aligned with institutional strategic goals. The result was the creation of a pan-university employability strategy that included sector-leading investments in its employability services.

University of Reading's placement provision model

The University of Reading has developed a flexible model of placement provision that enables it to offer 'real world' learning opportunities to over 9,000 undergraduates. Placements remain optional, but over 1,000 students registered in the first year. There are three placement models to suit different academic disciplines, though departments may offer more than one type.

The Universities of Brighton and Sussex's joint careers fair

In the summer of 2011, the building work of Brighton and Hove Albion FC's new stadium was finally completed, situated next door to the University of Brighton and just across the road from the University of Sussex. During construction, it was made very clear to the city of Brighton and Hove that this stadium, the American Express Community Stadium, was going to live up to its name and be a facility for the whole community to enjoy - and not just for watching football.

University of Aberdeen: Embedding employability within the Scottish curriculum

Career Development: Find Your Direction is a 15-credit, second year, university-wide course, delivered by the University of Aberdeen's Careers Service. In Scotland it is traditional to offer a four-year degree in most subjects, and a course is equivalent to a module in the English higher education context.

Bournemouth University: Encouraging male students to engage with the placement process

A placement year is a compulsory component for the 260 students studying Bournemouth University's BA (Hons) Business Studies degree. From staff feedback and placement statistics we discovered that male students were less immersed in the placement process than female students, thus missing out on a number of early opportunities. The challenge was therefore to find a way to encourage early engagement.

University of Ulster: Employer-led careers module as part of the BSc Accounting degree

The University of Ulster 20 point, level 5 careers module is completed by BSc Hons Accounting students in Semester 1 of Year 2. It was designed and has been delivered by the Career Development Centre for a number of years with significant employer input as a main feature. This is a compulsory, core module delivered over 12 weeks which contributes to the students' overall degree classification.

University of Chester: Integrating an employer event into the curriculum

Inside the Creative Industries is an annual University of Chester event organised by Careers and Employability, the media department and a team of students from a variety of courses, including journalism, graphic design, PR, marketing, TV and English literature. Students put their questions to creative industry professionals to get advice, tips, industry views and the chance to network informally with employers.

Warwick's programme of support for ASD students

University of Bradford: Using the PebblePad Webfolio for assessment purposes

The Career Development Services at the University of Bradford has developed a Masters level, 20 credit module for final year pharmacy students. The module, developed in collaboration with the School of Pharmacy and in consultation with a range of employers in community and hospital pharmacies, uses an e-portfolio to assess reflection. It was felt that, in addition to the clinical knowledge and skills required for professional pharmacy practice, graduates require knowledge and skills in the management of both themselves and others in order to be successful.

The value of a professional exchange for careers services

Have you ever worked with a student considering studying or working abroad and wondered what it would be like to work somewhere else yourself for a short time? As careers advisers, we encourage students to explore the benefits of academic or work experience overseas, but we too can benefit from a professional exchange. Staff at the University of Oxford Careers Service have recently undertaken a number of professional exchanges both within their own university admissions department and abroad at the Career Planning Service at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. 

North-west universities Unite With Business

Unite With Business is a collaboration between six leading universities in the north-west of England, part-funded by the ERDF. The scheme provides paid placements for students and alumni in the region to work on real-life problems and projects within the SME community, thus developing the employability of students and alumni while supporting the regional community of SMEs through practical knowledge exchange activity.

Engagement with alumni at the University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham offers a range of opportunities to connect with alumni. As engagement increases, so does the opportunity to seek gifts: Birmingham's latest fundraising campaign has been boosted by the generosity of alumni. However, engagement with alumni is not just about seeking donations. The Careers Network aims to deliver a comprehensive service to both alumni and students, which includes the Alumni Leadership Mentoring Programme.

QM Projects: A local work experience scheme

To enhance the employability of Queen Mary students, QM Careers, part of The Careers Group, University of London, identified a need to create new local work experience opportunities. In January 2012, QM Projects was launched. Although still in its first year, the impact of the scheme on students' employability is already being reported

Shortlist for the TARGETjobs AGCAS award announced

National Teaching Fellowship Scheme 2013

The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) is now open. The NTFS recognises and rewards excellent learning and teaching. It is open to all higher education (HE) institutions and further education (FE) colleges with more than 100 FTE students in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Engineering insights from the AGR Engineering Sector Focus Group

The AGR Engineering Sector Focus Group met in December 2012 to discuss employment opportunities and challenges in the engineering sector. The meeting was attended by David Gilchrist, Careers Consultant at City University London and AGR AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) for engineering, who also put questions from AGCAS members to the group. The meeting was attended by a range of engineering companies, including Siemens, Denso and Thales.

University of Aberdeen creates digital employability skills project

OPEN (Online Presence, Employability, Network) is an HEA-funded project, created by the University of Aberdeen for and with students to increase their digital employability skills. It will be a resource that aims to ensure tomorrow's graduates are keeping up-to-date with digital employability methods via social media.

Nottingham leads UK-Indonesia careers initiative

The University of Nottingham recently held an event designed to support Indonesian students based at universities across the UK who return to their home country to work after graduating. The event, organised by the Careers and Employability Service and the International Office, reached out to Indonesian students in Britain and encouraged them to take future opportunities in business with Indonesian and British companies.

Yorkshire universities celebrate internship project success

The Yorkshire Universities Internship Project was developed in response to the current graduate employment environment. The higher education sector recognised a growing need for graduates with meaningful work experience, and for universities to provide effective employability development and employment opportunities. In response to this, four universities in the Yorkshire region made the decision to run an internship programme of placements within their institutions, in partnership with Yorkshire Universities.

AGCAS Biennial Conference 2013 - now open for booking

AGCAS Biennial is the premier event in the HE careers calendar. AGCAS Biennial 2013 is a three-day conference at the University of Exeter comprising three stand-alone days. Graduate labour market improves further, report university careers and employability services

The annual AGCAS graduate labour market survey reveals that the vast majority of the leaders of higher education careers and employability services believe that the graduate labour market improved further in 2015.

More than four in five (81.5%) of respondents to the AGCAS Heads of Service Graduate Market and Student Engagement Survey agree that the graduate labour market was more buoyant in the year to 31 July 2015 than the previous year. 

AGCAS Awards for Excellence 2013: Shortlists announced

The shortlisted nominations for the AGCAS Awards for Excellence 2013 have been announced. Nominations were received in 11 different categories for a wide range of projects from AGCAS member services in all parts of the UK.

HESA publishes graduate employment figures

HESA has published performance indicators for the employment of leavers from higher education (HE). The statistics cover every HE institution in the UK and are based on the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey of 2011/12 graduates. The survey was changed for 2011/12 so the results are not comparable with those for previous years.

Career webinars success for Brunel

Staff at Brunel University's Placement and Careers Centre have delivered a series of webinars aimed at students. Staff started by trialling a series of online workshops over the summer. The idea was that although many students and graduates would have returned home, they may still appreciate a set of workshops to help them in their careers strategies and job hunting.

What Do Graduates Do? 2013 version now available

The 2013 edition of What Do Graduates Do? has been published. What Do Graduates Do? is a collaboration between the AGCAS Education Liaison Task Group and HECSU. The research shows the destinations of 242,285 first degree graduates and 81,650 postgraduates in January 2013 - six months after they had left university. This year's report features unprecedented data on postgraduate destinations.

University of Cape Town announced as new AGCAS member

AGCAS is delighted to welcome the University of Cape Town as its first non-UK and Ireland service member. Head of Service, David Casey, was formerly an AGCAS member at University College Dublin. David and two colleagues, Nawaal Boolay and Shaminie Chetty, attended AGCAS Biennial at the University of Exeter earlier this month. 

AGCAS announces 2013 awards winners

The results of the 2013 AGCAS Awards for Excellence have been announced. Winners were presented with their awards at an official ceremony and dinner as part of the AGCAS Biennial Conference at the University of Exeter, earlier this month. The number of nominations received in each category is evidence of the high-quality, innovative and collaborative work taking place at AGCAS member services across the country.

Newman University announced as new AGCAS member

AGCAS is pleased to welcome Newman University as its 135th member service. The university is based in Birmingham and has just over 2,500 higher education students. Head of Service, Melissa Clarke, was previously a Conference Member of AGCAS.

University of Bedfordshire: Hire Me Project review

The University of Bedfordshire has won the AGCAS Student and Graduate Employability Award (in association with The Higher Education Academy) at the AGCAS Biennial Conference 2013 for their support for unemployed graduates of any university who live in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

University of Exeter: Think it, Try it, Do it

The University of Exeter won the AGCAS Entrepreneurship Award (in association with NCEE) at the AGCAS Biennial Conference 2013 for their innovative strategic approach to the provision of enterprise and entrepreneurship education based around a three-fold 'Think about it', 'Try it' and 'Do it' approach.

Introduction to Newman University Careers Service

UCL Careers Service: Careers and Cultural Management Module

UCL Careers Service, part of The Careers Group, University of London, won the AGCAS Careers Service/Academic Department Partnership Award at the AGCAS Biennial Conference 2013 for successfully delivering a credit bearing professional development module to encourage students to consider their careers in a global context. Since its pilot within the Management Science & Innovation department (MS&I), the programme has seen over 90% of students in employment within three months of graduation.

Liverpool John Moores University: World of Work Certificate

The World of Work Careers Centre at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) won the AGCAS Technology Award at the AGCAS Biennial Conference 2013 for successfully embedding their World of Work Certificate into every undergraduate degree.

University of Huddersfield: The Employability Challenge, Skills for Life

Crowned AGCAS Awards for Excellence winner in the category of Research, the University of Huddersfield Careers and Employability Service undertook its research project with funding from the PMI2 British Council initiative. The work was carried out in conjunction with the University's School of Education and Professional Development and in partnership with GPNU University in Guangzhou, China.

University of Leeds: Careers Registration scheme

The University of Leeds Careers Centre won the AGCAS Student Engagement Award and the AGCAS Excellence Award - Overall Winner at the AGCAS Biennial Conference 2013 for its Careers Registration scheme, a groundbreaking and new compulsory element to university registration, which connects students to the Careers Centre even before they start at the university.

Student-led engineering employability audit project at UWE

Adele Merrison, Careers Consultant at the University of the West of England (UWE), successfully bid for HE STEM project funding for a student-led employability audit of engineering degrees. The project aims were to demonstrate that capturing the student voice and co-inquiry with learners leads to more meaningful learning and, at the same time, to encourage student input into employability initiatives within the curriculum.

University of Exeter: Partnership with Exeter City Football Club

The University of Exeter won the AGCAS Careers Service/Employer Partnership Award at the AGCAS Biennial Conference 2013 for their strategic partnership with Exeter City Football Club (ECFC) to provide valuable knowledge and expertise to the football club through the creation of work experience for students.

University of Ulster: Internship programmes

Employability and Marketing at the University of Ulster won the AGCAS Award for Employer Engagement (in association with AGR) for engaging employers through two key graduate internship programmes: the Professional Experience Programme (PEP); and Santander supported graduate internships with local SMEs.

Peer-to-peer mentoring across education programmes

Adele Merrison, Careers Consultant at the University of the West of England (UWE), describes the mentoring project she set up across education programmes at the university. The project aimed to improve UWE students' applications for teaching posts, at the same time as providing HE work experience for UWE Qualification in Careers Guidance (QCG) students.

University of Aberdeen: Bringing Graduate Attributes to Life

The primary aim of this Higher Education Academy (HEA) funded project is to translate high level graduate attribute statements into practical language that can be understood and used by academic staff in their subject areas, students in those areas and also by employers.

Jan Perrett awarded MBE

Jan Perrett, former Deputy Director of the Careers and Employability Service at The University of Nottingham and Honorary Lifetime Member of AGCAS, has been named in the Queen's birthday honours lists 2014.

The lists recognise the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK. Jan has been awarded an MBE for Services to Higher Education.

London interns and employers receive royal recognition

HRH The Princess Royal has met graduates and young professionals at the Rewarding Interns event organised by The Careers Group, University of London to award the best interns and employers participating in the London Councils Internship Programme (LCIP) and the Step Internships Scheme.

AGR survey: Graduate vacancies predicted to rise

The Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) has published its Graduate Recruitment Summer Survey 2014, providing a detailed insight into the state of the graduate jobs market. Published biannually, the survey also contains: the latest statistics on graduate vacancies and salaries across career areas and regions; graduate selection methods; the availability of student placements and internships; and graduate retention rates and salary progression.

Success for world's first careers and employability MOOC

A team of careers consultants at The Careers Group, University of London has successfully designed and delivered the world's first careers and employability skills MOOC via the Coursera platform. Delivered over six weeks from May to July 2014, the course explored aspects of self-awareness, skills awareness, career readiness, articulating experiences, making a good impression and networking, both online and in person.

Big drop in early graduate unemployment, reports What Do Graduates Do?

Findings from the latest (2014) edition of What Do Graduates Do? show that graduate unemployment fell from 8.5% to 7.3% year-on-year, marking the biggest drop in early graduate unemployment in 15 years.

This annual publication is a collaboration between the AGCAS Education Liaison Task Group and HECSU: HECSU provides the facts and figures from the DLHE returns and AGCAS members apply their expertise to provide commentary and written articles to help interpret the figures.

Stranmillis University College joins AGCAS

Creating global citizens: International placements at Aston

With an increasing number of businesses calling for graduates with international experience, never before has the need to be able to collaborate in intercultural contexts been so important. Students who complete a placement abroad will develop the global competencies that employers are looking for, which is why Aston University sends over 300 students on international placements every year.

The AGCAS Research Staff Task Group has published a new report, Getting the First Lecturing Job, which reveals how doctoral researchers and PhDs manage the challenging and demanding transition from early careers researcher to the established academic position of lecturer.

A new survey from the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) reveals that the vast majority of the heads of careers and employability services believe that the graduate labour market improved further in 2014.

Impact of the closure of the Post Study Work route revealed

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Migration has published an inquiry report into the impact of closing the Post Study Work (PSW) route in 2012, which allowed non-EU graduates to seek employment in the UK for up to two years after their studies.

University of the Arts London (UAL) won Best University Careers/Employability Service at the recent National Undergraduate Employability Awards (NUE Awards). Commitment to Employability award for the University of Kent

The University of Kent Careers and Employability Service won the award for Most Improved Commitment to Employability at the recent National Undergraduate Employability Awards (NUE Awards). The awards took place on Friday 6 February 2015 in London and recognise the outstanding achievements of universities, students and employers in the undergraduate employability market.

Update on architectural education from RIBA

In March 2015, Chris Jones, AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Senior Careers Adviser at The University of Nottingham, attended the RIBA Education Council and Forum. This was an open meeting to discuss and vote on five key recommendations from the RIBA Education Review.

University of Leicester wins AGR Award

The University of Leicester Career Development Service won Preparation for work by Higher Education (Overall Strategy) at the recent AGR Graduate Development Awards. Award winners were announced at the AGR Development Conference 2015 in London on 19 March. The award is given to HE institutions for outstanding commitment to improving the employability and long-term career success of their graduates across a wide range of activities.

Phoenix Education Trust wins TARGETjobs AGCAS award

Phoenix Education Trust has won the AGCAS Award for Careers Service Engagement at the 2015 TARGETjobs National Graduate Recruitment Awards. Phoenix Education Trust was nominated by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). The award was presented to Rachel Roberts, Director of the Phoenix Education Trust, by Eluned Jones, AGCAS President and Director of Student Employability at the University of Birmingham, at the awards ceremony in London on 1st April. Learn more about careers in landscape architecture

The Landscape Institute (LI) is keen to raise members' awareness of the graduate opportunities available in landscape architecture. Poppy Smith, Education Development Officer at the LI, has provided an overview of the profession, and of the careers resources available to members, and is working with the AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) Marcus Zientek to help answer members' questions.

Nicola Turner awarded MBE

AGCAS member Nicola Turner, Director of Employability at Aston University, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for her services to higher education and graduate employability. Since joining Aston University in 2003, she has helped thousands of students, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, raise their aspirations and launch successful and rewarding careers. 

"I come to work every day and I do a job that I love – I thought that was as good as it gets. When I got the letter I was amazed and overwhelmed. It feels very special", Nicola commented.

New AGCAS President-Elect appointed

AGCAS is pleased to announce that Shelagh Green has been appointed as AGCAS President-Elect. Shelagh will serve as President-Elect for one year, leading to the commencement of a two-year term of office as AGCAS President from 1st August 2016.

Spotlight on the company secretarial profession

The Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators (ICSA) is keen to raise awareness of the company secretarial profession, and that of the chartered secretary, amongst students and careers advisers. Tara Wilson, Business Development Manager at ICSA, has provided an overview of the profession, and of the careers resources available to members, and is working with AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) Chris Packham to raise awareness of graduate opportunities.

Record number of new graduates in work, reports What Do Graduates Do?

Findings from the 2015 edition of What Do Graduates Do? show that a total of 199,810 graduates were known to be working in the UK six months after graduation, up 6% from last year and marking the largest number of new graduate entrants to the UK labour market on record.

Published annually, What Do Graduates Do? is the result of a close collaboration between AGCAS and Prospects, on behalf of the Higher Education Careers Service Unit (HECSU). 

Sue Bennett appointed AGCAS Vice-President

AGCAS is delighted to announce that Sue Bennett, Director of Student Careers and Skills at The University of Warwick, has been appointed to the role of AGCAS Vice-President on the Board of Directors. Sue brings to the role a significant amount of experience in internationalisation. Most recently, this has included creating a contract between AGCAS and the British Council for the supply of IAG and employer engagement training to new careers service staff and their management in Kazakhstan.

Elaine Boyes appointed AGCAS Executive Director

AGCAS is delighted to announce the successful appointment of Elaine Boyes to the position of AGCAS Executive Director. Elaine will be joining AGCAS in early 2016 and will take up a position that is absolutely fundamental to our vision of creating a sustainable and representative professional body, which is recognised more broadly as the 'go-to' organisation in our field

The Phoenix Editorial Team is seeking articles for the next issue of AGCAS's digital journal, which is due to be published in February 2016. The main theme of the next issue will be Employer Engagement. The Editorial Team is interested in receiving examples of good/innovative practice, evidence of research, views or opinion pieces on a range of topics based on recent and/or previous experience of working with all types of employers from all sectors.

AGCAS is delighted to welcome Zayed University, Abu Dhabi as our latest new international service member. Based in the United Arab Emirates, Zayed University offers bachelor and master's degrees in arts and sciences, business, education, IT and media.

ALO update on careers with languages

Diane Appleton, AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) for the LLAS Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, has produced an update on her work with the LLAS. LLAS engages in research and projects at the level of government policy and activities which promote greater public engagement with languages and related studies.

Six employers have been shortlisted for the AGCAS Award for Careers Service Engagement 2016. They were all nominated by AGCAS-member higher education careers services.

AGCAS Annual Conference 2016 - call for workshops

AGCAS Annual Conference 2016: Bookings now open

Bookings are now open for the AGCAS Annual Conference for HE Careers and Employability Professionals 2016. Returning to a three-day event running from the 6th - 8th September at the University of Chester, the conference theme is Strategy in Action: Innovate, Influence, Impress.

Despite being widely preached by universities, careers services and students alike, confusion still surrounds the graduate attributes agenda.  

AGCAS response to the EU referendum

Following last week's EU referendum outcome, the role of AGCAS member services in providing high-quality information, advice and guidance to students and graduates, and delivering support to employers and academics, is more important than ever to ensure our students and graduates develop the skills and attributes needed to navigate an uncertain and potentially changing jobs market.

As a community, we must prepare for the uncertainty and potential changes in the graduate labour market.

AGCAS response to the TEF consultation

Following consultation with members, AGCAS has submitted a response to the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Technical Consultation. The AGCAS response relates specifically to the questions posed about the use of employment outcome metrics. The AGCAS view is that implementation of the TEF must take into account much wider conversations within the graduate employment context.

First-Year Student Careers and Employability Survey Report

Based on a pilot survey undertaken in a UK university in November 2015, the ‘First-Year Student Careers and Employability Survey Report’ was produced by the AGCAS Research group in early 2016. The report includes students' prior experience of careers support, current views on careers and employability, future intentions of accessing career related activities and opportunities, and their confidence level in practical aspects of employability.

AGCAS Awards for Excellence: 2016 shortlists announced

The shortlisted nominations for the AGCAS Awards for Excellence 2016 have been announced. This year saw a high number of entries, with 48 AGCAS member services nominated for a broad range of activities across the full range of HE careers and employability work. The standard of the initiatives submitted has been exceptional. In the end, 23 institutions have been shortlisted for the 8 Service Awards.

Summary of recent AGCAS GLaM discussions

The AGCAS Graduate Labour Market Sub Committee (GLaM) works with HESA and other key stakeholders on a range of issues concerning DLHE and related data collections. The GLaM Sub Committee met most recently in April where the group received reports from HESA, BIS, HECSU and ONS.

Access into Leading Professions: AGCAS response to APPG's social mobility inquiry

Following consultation with members, AGCAS has submitted a response to the call for written evidence for the APPG on Social Mobility's Inquiry into Access into Leading Professsions.

The AGCAS response focuses on three key strands: improving social mobility through outreach and support; promoting fairness in graduate recruitment; and encouraging transparency.

AGCAS South East Practitioner’s Conference

On Thursday 23rd June, the Career Development Service at Canterbury Christ Church University in Kent, played host to over 150 higher education careers colleagues from across their region at the AGCAS South East Practitioner's Conference. This marked the second of AGCAS's regional conferences and the first to be held in this part of the country.

AGCAS Resources Survey 2016: snapshot of HE careers services

The results of the AGCAS Member Services Resources Survey 2016 have now been collated and analysed. The purpose of this research was to explore the strategic positioning of careers services within HE institutions and to find out ways that careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) is delivered.  

ALO update on teaching in the FE sector

In June 2016, Alison Proudlove, AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) for The Education & Training Foundation (ETF), met with a representative from the ETF to discuss further education (FE) teaching. Alison has since produced a detailed report giving an update on developments in the sector.

AGCAS research into students' experience of careers fairs

In 2015, the universities of Birmingham, Royal Holloway and Salford took part in a pilot project run by members of the AGCAS Research Group.

The research sought to gain a better understanding of what students gain from careers fairs in terms of information-gathering, opportunities for self-reflection, concrete links to employers, and applications and interview advice.

Disabled graduates' labour market prospects better than assumed, finds AGCAS report

AGCAS has published the latest edition of What Happens Next? A Report on the First Destinations of 2014 Disabled Graduates.

Edinburgh wins AGCAS Award for Internationalisation 2016

The University of Edinburgh Careers Service was crowned the winner of the AGCAS Award for Internationalisation, sponsored by UKCISA, at the 2016 AGCAS Awards for Excellence. The Careers Service supports the wider university's strategic aim of incorporating internationalisation in all areas of university activity.

In 2015, two of the department's initiatives really stood out for developing students' international mindset, outlook and ambition.

York wins AGCAS Award for Technology 2016

The winner of the 2016 AGCAS Award for Technology, sponsored by FDM, is Careers at the University of York for their York Profiles & Mentors scheme.

The scheme is an innovative new web platform that connects students directly to graduates working in their job sector of interest. Since its release in December 2015, nearly 1,000 profiles have been created, allowing students to read career stories, ask questions and engage in an ongoing mentoring relationship.

Southampton wins AGCAS Award for Academic Engagement 2016

The 2016 AGCAS Award for Academic Engagement, sponsored by Gradcore, has been awarded to the University of Southampton. Their impressive partnership between the Careers and Employability Service, the School of Geography and Grosvenor has created tangible and long-lasting benefits to students.

Greenwich wins AGCAS Award for Employability 2016

The winner of the 2016 AGCAS Award for Employability, sponsored by Prospects, is the University of Greenwich's Employability and Careers Service (ECS) for its new approach to suppporting the employability of its students, which has significantly improved the employment prospects of all Greenwich students, including Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) students.

Lincoln wins AGCAS Award for Employer Engagement 2016

The winner of the 2016 AGCAS Award for Employer Engagement, sponsored by Gradconsult, is the University of Lincoln's Careers and Employability Centre. By developing an innovative employability partnership with Lincolnshire Police the university has been able to introduce their first employer-branded Lincoln Award, which has given students unprecedented access to in-house training and facilities, offering a distinct employability advantage whilst increasing police presence and visibility in the local student community.

Salford wins AGCAS Award for Entrepreneurship 2016

The University of Salford's Careers and Employability Service has been crowned the winner of the 2016 AGCAS Award for Entrepreneurship, sponsored by GSM London. The service has started offering lifelong enterprise and business start-up support to all students and graduates both within the curriculum and beyond. It provides free courses, events and incubators, which attract approximately a sixth of all Salford students to take part in enterprise events each year.

Audrey McCulloch wins AGCAS Significant Influence Award 2016

Audrey McCulloch is one of two recipients of the 2016 AGCAS Significant Influence Award. Audrey has been part of the fabric of higher education careers and employability work and, more specifically, AGCAS Scotland for over twenty years.

Southampton wins AGCAS Award for Partnership with Professional Services 2016

The winner of the 2016 AGCAS Award for Partnership with Professional Services, sponsored by Unitemps, is the University of Southampton. The Careers and Employability Service demonstrated collegiality in its partnership with Enabling Services in the launch of a programme to support the successful transition of disabled students into employment.

Sussex wins AGCAS Award for Student Engagement 2016

The winner of the 2016 AGCAS Award for Student Engagement, sponsored by CareerHub, is the University of Sussex's Careers and Employability Service for its First-Generation Scholars (FGS) Scheme, which addresses barriers to career success and progression.

As part of the scheme, FGS students are offered a comprehensive range of unique, funded career development opportunities to address a potential lack of social and cultural capital and encourage more favourable employability outcome.

Isla Fay wins the 2016 John Roberts Memorial Prize

The 2016 John Roberts Memorial Prize has been awarded to Isla Fay at the University of Cambridge for her work on the Postgraduate Certificate in Careers Education, Information and Guidance in HE (CEIGHE).

The John Roberts Memorial Prize is awarded annually, in memory of former AGCAS member, John Roberts, to the best student on a CEIGHE qualification course, delivered by The University of Warwick in collaboration with AGCAS.

Nominations open for TARGETjobs AGCAS award 2017

Nominations are now open for the AGCAS Award for Careers Service Engagement, part of the TARGETjobs National Graduate Recruitment Awards 2017. The award recognises those employers who provide outstanding support for careers services' work with students and graduates. AGCAS member services are invited to nominate one employer (of any size and from any sector) who has demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively to ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge, skills and experience that will allow them to enter, thrive in, and gain satisfaction from the world of work.

Craig Phillips: AGCAS Outstanding Newcomer 2016

The winner of the 2016 AGCAS Outstanding Newcomer Award is Craig Phillips, Career Consultant at The University of Edinburgh. Despite having only started his career in HE 20 months ago, Craig has already made a phenomenal contribution to the shaping of the Careers and Employability Service at Edinburgh.

Heads of higher education careers services report a healthy graduate job market in 2016, despite challenges of Brexit
Around 70% of respondents to the Annual AGCAS Graduate Labour Market and Student Engagement Survey reported an increase in graduate vacancies and saw the market as generally more buoyant than the previous year.

AGCAS consultation response on the Partial Review of the Shortage Occupation List: Teachers
AGCAS has submitted a formal response to the Migration Advisory Committee’s Call for Evidence requested in September 2016 on the Partial Review of the Shortage Occupation List: Teachers.

NewDLHE and the future of graduate outcomes: AGCAS consultation response request
HESA are currently running a public consultation on the NewDLHE as part of a fundamental review of graduate outcomes data. The proposed NewDLHE will combine a universal census survey of graduates with linked data from other sources (which will include salary information from HMRC). AGCAS members are invited to contribute to an official AGCAS response to the consultation.

We are introducing eight new Types of Jobs titles on to the Prospects website to add to the extensive list of Types of Jobs (occupational profiles) we already publish with Graduate Prospects, as part of our joint commitment to produce relevant careers resources.

AGCAS member services win National Undergraduate Employability Awards
The eighth National Undergraduate Employability Awards (NUE Awards), took place on 24 February in London. The Awards were made up of three categories: Employer, University and Student, and amongst the University category winners were three AGCAS member service, to whom we would like to offer our congratulations.

Vacancies on the AGCAS Internationalisation Task Group
AGCAS is currently seeking applications from members for two positions on the Internationalisation Task Group, the focus of which is to help shape the careers support available to international students at UK Universities. The group meets two to three times annually to work on a wide range of events, conferences and resources.

Apprenticeships predicted to grow 59% this year
The latest report from the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) indicates that employers are significantly scaling-up their apprenticeship programmes in 2017 with hiring expected to increase by 59%.
