Recession, graduate recruitment and the media
Media coverage of the impact of the recession on graduate employment has intensified in recent weeks. While not suggesting that graduates are going to have an easy ride in 2009, AGCAS feels it has a responsibility to put some of the coverage in perspective.




Civil Service newsletter for careers advisers

The Civil Service Fast Stream has published the latest edition of Fast Stream Focus, its newsletter for careers advisers, which offers the latest news on graduate recruitment into the Civil Service.




Army recruits careers services
Around 30 university careers staff visited Sandhurst Military Academy earlier this year to hear presentations from Sandhurst staff about the new graduate recruitment strategy launched by the army at the end of 2008. Sam Rhodes, Student Services Manager at the University of Brighton, reports on the visit.




Survey figures don't add up

Graduates can be forgiven for being confused by the messages about their job prospects that they're reading in the media.

At this week's AGR conference, delegates apparently heard that there are over 70 applicants for every job; that 78% of employers will only recruit graduates with a 2:1 or above; the number recruiting only from the Russell Group has tripled; salaries have been frozen; and the number of vacancies has fallen by 2%.

AGR Annual Conference: 2012 report

AGCAS was well represented at this year's Association of Graduate Recruiters' (AGR) Annual Conference at The Celtic Manor Resort in South Wales. For those who weren't lucky enough to get along, we asked a few of the AGCAS delegates what they made of it.




UK's largest employers of graduates revealed

The Complete University Guide has revealed the employers recruiting the greatest number of UK graduates. Analysis of the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey shows that Boots, the Nottingham-based pharmaceutical and retail group, recruited the greatest number of UK graduates in 2009-10, with more than 520 graduates placed in its various divisions.

The National Health Service is the second largest employer, with almost 500 graduates (excluding doctors, dentists and nurses).

AGCAS project to research graduate success

AGCAS and AGR have been commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to carry out research into the graduate labour market with the aim of giving students, graduates, careers and employability professionals, the HE sector, recruiters and government a better idea of how the graduate labour market works in practice.




Psychometric assessment tools summary - new resource

The AGCAS Psychometric Assessment Task Group has launched a new resource for careers services. It summarises key psychometric assessment tools available for use with students and graduates, either for practising graduate recruitment tests or for careers guidance and/or personal development purposes.

The AGCAS Research Staff Task Group has published a new report, Getting the First Lecturing Job, which reveals how doctoral researchers and PhDs manage the challenging and demanding transition from early careers researcher to the established academic position of lecturer. 




TARGETjobs AGCAS award shortlist announced

Six employers have been shortlisted for the AGCAS Award for Careers Service Engagement 2015. They were all nominated by higher education careers services. The award is one of the prestigious annual TARGETjobs National Graduate Recruitment Awards.




Grant Thornton: two years on from dropping graduate entry requirements

Grant Thornton currently hires over 500 trainees across four programmes and receives over 10,000 applications. Around two years ago they dropped all academic entry requirements for all their programmes, instead focusing on behaviours, shared values and potential. The report can also be used with undergraduate and taught postgraduates considering a research degree as their next option.




Openness: Understanding why students are reluctant to be open with employers about their disability

This research was undertaken to help increase the number of graduates who have a disability or long-term health condition successfully apply for graduate jobs. The aim was to understand why disabled graduates are so reluctant to inform employers about their disability during the recruitment process, and to highlight what employers needed to be doing to encourage openness.
