University of the Arts London win NUE award

University of the Arts London (UAL) won Best University Careers/Employability Service at the recent National Undergraduate Employability Awards (NUE Awards). The awards, which took place on Friday 6 February 2015 in London, recognise the outstanding achievements of universities, students and employers in the undergraduate employability market.




AGCAS shares recession experiences at GTI breakfast meeting
Anne-Marie Martin of the Careers Group at the University of London has spoken, on behalf of AGCAS, to an audience of graduate recruiters and careers service heads. The occasion was a GTI Breakfast News meeting. Anne-Marie summarised research carried out amongst AGCAS members about the impact of the recession on campus and she told the audience what careers services are doing to help students. 




Top professions out of reach - government report
Top professions, such as medicine and law, are increasingly inaccessible to all but the most affluent, according to a new government report on social mobility. The report looks into widening access to high-status jobs and recommends that young people in England have access to much better careers advice.




Graduate internship plans announced

The government has made a long-awaited announcement on its plans for graduate internships. The package of measures to help combat graduate unemployment will include opportunities for both paid and unpaid work experience in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.




Dundee first to offer internship graduate certificate
The University of Dundee's Careers Service has become the first in the UK to offer graduates an internship certificate. The Scottish Internship Graduate Certificate (SIGC) is designed to boost student employability and career prospects.

The National Placement & Internship Awards 2012

This year's National Placement & Internship Awards took place at City University, London on 18 January 2012. The awards were created by RateMyPlacement.co.uk to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of all stakeholders involved in undergraduate work placements and internships. Now in its third year, the event was supported for the first time by AGCAS.




Government announces national internship service
The government has announced the creation of a national internship service, which will deliver undergraduate internships, partly with the aim of widening access to professions which Alan Milburn's report Unleashing Aspiration highlighted as being out of reach for less well-off or connected graduates.




AGCAS poll on unpaid internships

AGCAS would like to know its members' view on unpaid internships. Do they show which students and graduates are prepared to go the extra mile? Or do they exploit graduates who feel forced to play along and discriminate against those who can't afford to take them up? Are they unfair but a fact of life? Or should the next government have the courage to enforce existing legislation?

 




Unpaid internships - the AGCAS view
AGCAS has been canvassing its members' views on unpaid internships. The poll is still open, but of the 170 members who had voted by 24 May, 86% agreed that the government should clamp down on unpaid internships.

Graduate employment statistics: AGCAS response
AGCAS says that figures reported in the media based on a recent press release for What Do Graduates Do 2010? are almost a year out of date. Employer surveys and anecdotal evidence from HE careers services suggests that the position has improved considerably since this time last year. Graduates shouldn't be complacent as reduced funding for the public sector may well change the picture again, but neither should they feel demoralised.




Curriculum reform at Aberdeen

The University of Aberdeen is undergoing a process of ‘curriculum reform’. The careers service has played a major role in this by supporting the university in PDP and providing a variety of credit-bearing careers education courses. One of its key activities since 2007 has been supporting placement activity, with the establishment of its Placement Development Unit whose remit has been to develop summer placement opportunities for the university’s penultimate year undergraduate students. And, in January 2010, the Aberdeen Internship was launched.   




Internships and the minimum wage - AGCAS consulted

The government is currently updating its guidance on work experience, internships and the national minimum wage. AGCAS has been invited to comment on the drafts of guidance aimed at employers and workers/interns, and on the appropriateness of case studies.

Survey reveals trust in careers services

High Fliers, in association with The Times, have released their annual review of students' perceptions of careers, career expectations and future aspirations. Over 17,000 final year students from 30 of the country's higher education league table leaders took part in The UK Graduate Careers Survey 2012. The data shows how trusted careers services are, with 93% of finalists surveyed having used the service. It also suggests more and more students are undertaking work experience and internships, supported by their careers service. 




Welsh graduates surpass stats for work experience

Figures published by High Fliers Research in The Graduate Market in 2012 state that a third of graduates secure a job with an employer after completing an internship with the company. GO Wales has surpassed this this with 65% of Welsh graduates continuing to be employed once their 10-week work placement has ended.




Yorkshire Universities' Graduate Internship Scheme

Huddersfield is one of four Yorkshire institutions working in conjunction with Yorkshire Universities and Graduates Yorkshire to offer internal internships to its own graduates. Alongside Leeds Metropolitan, Bradford and York St John, the scheme offers 12 weeks' work experience to 2010 and 2011 leavers in a role linked to a graduate profession.




Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU): BIO Employability Exit (BEE) Initiative
The Division of BIO within the School of Health and Life Sciences and GCU Careers Service have created the BEE Initiative. This initiative addresses employment rates for international MSc students within biological and biomedical sciences (BIO) with an emphasis on improving career prospects both locally, globally and in their home country. It aims to empower graduates to understand the value of transferable 21st century graduate attributes, develop career management skills and raise confidence in dealing with employers.




Careers services respond to Wilson Review

AGCAS welcomes the government's response to the Wilson Review. In its response the government has announced that it will provide some seed corn funding to support AGR and AGCAS to work in partnership on the implementation of the Wilson review recommendations aimed at AGR and AGCAS.




Loaves and fishes - internship programme at York St John University

Careers services within smaller institutions often have to be creative to ensure that their students have access to similar opportunities to those available in larger institutions. The recent implementation of a graduate internships project at York St John University provides an example. 




University of Birmingham - a strategic commitment to employability

In 2010, the University of Birmingham started a year-long process of creating an institutional employability strategy. The process involved robust and objective appraisals of existing employability provision, including evaluation by an external consultant, an internal review focusing on value for money, and impact measurement and assessments on whether provision aligned with institutional strategic goals. The result was the creation of a pan-university employability strategy that included sector-leading investments in its employability services.




University of Brighton’s Internship Programme gets a boost from Santander UK

The University of Brighton runs a graduate Internship Programme aimed at increasing paid graduate-level work opportunities locally. With campuses in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings, local employers include large, well-known organisations such as the NHS and American Express, but there is also a high concentration of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly in the digital and media industries.




Dundee careers service runners up in Guardian awards

The University of Dundee Careers Service has won runner up in the Employability Initiative Awards from The Guardian for their innovative internship programme. The Scottish Internship Graduate Certificate (SIGC) is a credit-bearing academic qualification consisting of a six-week intensive taught module and a six-month internship placement with a Scottish employer.




Graduate labour market still on the up

Heads of higher education careers and employability services tend towards believing that the graduate labour market was more buoyant in the first quarter of 2013 (January to March) than at the same time last year. 93.1% of those surveyed by AGCAS reported that, in their experience, the graduate labour market was the same or more buoyant (41.4% better, 51.7% same) compared with 3.4% who believed it was less buoyant. 3.4% said they did not know.




Yorkshire universities celebrate internship project success

The Yorkshire Universities Internship Project was developed in response to the current graduate employment environment. The higher education sector recognised a growing need for graduates with meaningful work experience, and for universities to provide effective employability development and employment opportunities. In response to this, four universities in the Yorkshire region made the decision to run an internship programme of placements within their institutions, in partnership with Yorkshire Universities.

Research carried out by graduate-jobs.com shows that Bournemouth University tops the list of academic institutions by proportion of graduates having work experience: almost nine out of ten Bournemouth students graduating this year stated on their CV that they have spent time in a workplace.

AGCAS Graduate Labour Market and Student Engagement Survey

This annual survey aims to build an informative dataset of the graduate labour market as it evolves and develops over time. The AGCAS survey is unique as it taps directly into the practical knowledge and experience of the graduate labour market from the leaders of higher education careers and employability services throughout the UK.

AGCAS first undertook this survey in 2014. The survey was repeated in 2015 and in 2016.
