An article looking at some of the official concerns about the supply of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduates has been published. Is there a shortage of scientists? A re-analysis of supply for the UK, published in the British Journal of Educational Studies, provides a summary of a series of recent research projects looking at the educational trajectories of prospective STEM professionals in the UK.




Leicester's research shows benefit of placements

The Careers Service and the Department of Engineering at the University of Leicester conducted statistical research to investigate the relationship between engineering students undertaking a placement and improved academic performance.

The meeting was attended by David Gilchrist, Careers Consultant at City University London and AGR AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) for engineering, who also put questions from AGCAS members to the group.




Insights from the AGR Engineering Sector Focus Group

The AGR Engineering, Energy and Industry (EEI) Sector Focus Group met in December 2013 to discuss the latest employment hot topics and challenges affecting the sector. The meeting was attended by David Gilchrist, Careers Consultant at City University London and AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) with the AGR group, who also put questions from AGCAS members to the group. The meeting was attended by a range of engineering companies, including Centrica, First Group, Jaguar Land Rover and Siemens.




Engineering insights from the AGR Engineering Sector Focus Group

The AGR Engineering Sector Focus Group met in December 2012 to discuss employment opportunities and challenges in the engineering sector. The meeting was attended by David Gilchrist, Careers Consultant at City University London and AGR AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) for engineering, who also put questions from AGCAS members to the group. The meeting was attended by a range of engineering companies, including Siemens, Denso and Thales.




Graduate labour market still on the up

Heads of higher education careers and employability services tend towards believing that the graduate labour market was more buoyant in the first quarter of 2013 (January to March) than at the same time last year. 93.1% of those surveyed by AGCAS reported that, in their experience, the graduate labour market was the same or more buoyant (41.4% better, 51.7% same) compared with 3.4% who believed it was less buoyant. 3.4% said they did not know.




Student-led engineering employability audit project at UWE

Adele Merrison, Careers Consultant at the University of the West of England (UWE), successfully bid for HE STEM project funding for a student-led employability audit of engineering degrees. The project aims were to demonstrate that capturing the student voice and co-inquiry with learners leads to more meaningful learning and, at the same time, to encourage student input into employability initiatives within the curriculum.




AGCAS seeks liaison officer for pharmaceutical industry

AGCAS is seeking a Liaison Officer (ALO) for the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI). An ALO establishes and maintains an information-sharing relationship with their link organisation and disseminates industry information to the HE careers community through AGCAS communication channels. They also help their link organisation communicate with AGCAS members and better understand the needs of HE careers professionals and their students.




New ALO for the pharmaceutical industry

AGCAS is pleased to announce that Ian Walker, Project Manager at the University of Leicester, is the new AGCAS liaison officer (ALO) for the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI). Ian will be liaising with the ABPI to ensure that members are kept informed about the pharmaceutical industry and graduate opportunities.




Update on careers in building services engineering

In April 2015, Andrew Byrne, AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) for the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and Careers Adviser at Liverpool John Moores University, represented AGCAS at a meeting of the CIBSE Careers Panel.




Call for evidence: graduate employment and accreditation in STEM

AGCAS has been invited to contribute evidence to HEFCE's review of graduate employment and accreditation in STEM. There are two separate reviews, both commissioned in direct response to the government's science and innovation strategy to explore some of the issues around the employment outcomes of graduates from STEM disciplines.

Improving Diversity in STEM
