The AGCAS Legal Profession Task Group is seeking a new Chair. This is a rewarding role which involves overseeing the work of the task group and chairing two meetings per year, held at The Bar Council and The Law Society respectively. You will have the opportunity to lead and make a significant contribution to the work of a key AGCAS task group.




Graduate labour market still on the up

Heads of higher education careers and employability services tend towards believing that the graduate labour market was more buoyant in the first quarter of 2013 (January to March) than at the same time last year. 93.1% of those surveyed by AGCAS reported that, in their experience, the graduate labour market was the same or more buoyant (41.4% better, 51.7% same) compared with 3.4% who believed it was less buoyant. 3.4% said they did not know.




Vacancy on the AGCAS Legal Profession Task Group

There is a vacancy for AGCAS members on the AGCAS Legal Profession Task Group (LPTG). The group currently comprises six members and meets twice a year to discuss a range of issues related to careers and opportunities in the legal sector.




Law careers resources guide reissued

The AGCAS Legal Professions Task Group has updated and reissued The Good Resources Guide, which contains a wealth of information resources for members to refer to when working with students and graduates interested in a career in law.




AGCAS support secures future for legal recruitment code

AGCAS, AGR (Association of Graduate Recruiters) and the JLD (Junior Lawyers Division of the Law Society of England and Wales) have agreed to remain as signatories to the Voluntary Code to Good Practice in the Recruitment of Trainee Solicitors. This follows the recent announcement from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) that they would be withdrawing as a signatory.




ICSA seeks ALO link with AGCAS

AGCAS is seeking a liaison officer (ALO) for ICSA (Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators), the qualifying and membership body for chartered secretaries, many of whom work as company secretaries and in other corporate governance roles. ICSA hopes to work with AGCAS to build graduates' understanding of the great variety, challenge and rewards of a company secretarial career and would value the support of an ALO.




New AGCAS link with ICSA

AGCAS is pleased to announce that Chris Packham, Careers Consultant at the University of Birmingham, is the new AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) for ICSA (Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators), the qualifying and membership body for chartered secretaries, many of whom work as company secretaries and in other corporate governance roles. Chris will be liaising with ICSA to ensure that members are kept informed about graduate opportunities in the profession.




Spotlight on the company secretarial profession

The Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators (ICSA) is keen to raise awareness of the company secretarial profession, and that of the chartered secretary, amongst students and careers advisers. Tara Wilson, Business Development Manager at ICSA, has provided an overview of the profession, and of the careers resources available to members, and is working with AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) Chris Packham to raise awareness of graduate opportunities.

This is a summary of feedback collated at an AGR Legal meeting in relation to the performance of candidates applying for training contracts. The meeting was attended by over 30 graduate recruiters from a range of commercial law firms including Magic Circle, national and regional commercial firms.
