MyPostgradApps - a Postgraduate Application Management Tool helping students through the cloud

Potential postgraduates repeatedly tell us, at postgraduate fairs, and through our websites PostgraduateStudentships and MastersCompare, that they find keeping track of multiple postgraduate applications daunting and often confusing, especially if they are used to the centralised undergraduate application system. Listening to students talk about their frustration at a student panel we ran led us to develop MyPostgradApps, our free online tool that allows students to manage their postgraduate applications, funding applications and open day bookings, all together in one place. MyPostgradApps was launched in autumn 2012 and is actively used by more than 800 students (and rising!) every day to manage their applications.

What Do Graduates Do? 2012 edition published

What do Graduates Do? 2012 is now available to download. It is a collaboration between the AGCAS Education Liaison Task Group and HECSU: HECSU provides the facts from the DLHE returns; AGCAS writers provide the expertise and articles to make sense of the figures.

Postgraduate education report launched

The Higher Education Commission's report on postgraduate education was launched at the House of Commons on 29 October 2012. Clare Jones, a member of the AGCAS Research Staff Task Group who, together with the AGCAS Postgraduate Students Task Group and senior AGCAS staff, coordinated the AGCAS response to the inquiry, attended the launch event.

HESA publishes graduate employment figures

HESA has published performance indicators for the employment of leavers from higher education (HE). The statistics cover every HE institution in the UK and are based on the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey of 2011/12 graduates. The survey was changed for 2011/12 so the results are not comparable with those for previous years.

What Do Graduates Do? 2013 version now available

The 2013 edition of What Do Graduates Do? has been published. What Do Graduates Do? is a collaboration between the AGCAS Education Liaison Task Group and HECSU. The research shows the destinations of 242,285 first degree graduates and 81,650 postgraduates in January 2013 - six months after they had left university. This year's report features unprecedented data on postgraduate destinations.

Big drop in early graduate unemployment, reports What Do Graduates Do?

Findings from the latest (2014) edition of What Do Graduates Do? show that graduate unemployment fell from 8.5% to 7.3% year-on-year, marking the biggest drop in early graduate unemployment in 15 years.

This annual publication is a collaboration between the AGCAS Education Liaison Task Group and HECSU: HECSU provides the facts and figures from the DLHE returns and AGCAS members apply their expertise to provide commentary and written articles to help interpret the figures.

Academic career journeys: new research published

The AGCAS Research Staff Task Group has published a new report, Getting the First Lecturing Job, which reveals how doctoral researchers and PhDs manage the challenging and demanding transition from early careers researcher to the established academic position of lecturer. 

AHECS survey - careers provision for doctoral students

The Association for Higher Education Careers Services (AHECS), the professional association of careers advisory and placement professionals in higher education in Ireland, is conducting an online survey to explore best practice in careers management provision for doctoral students, both at a national and international level.

What do graduates do? shows graduate unemployment rate lowest since 1989
The latest edition of What do graduates do? has shown that a robust graduate jobs market combined with a sharp rise in students taking postgraduate courses has led to the lowest graduate unemployment rate since 1989.

Transition to higher degrees across the UK: An analysis of national, institutional and individual differences

This report investigates patterns of transition to postgraduate degrees in the UK. It focuses on full-time UK- and EU-domiciled first degree graduates who successfully completed their studies in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years, using data about their studies, their background characteristics and their activity after graduation provided by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

Postgraduate Education: An independent inquiry by the Higher Education Commission

This inquiry, the first since the Browne Review and the subsequent rise in undergraduate tuition fees, has taken oral and written evidence from all the groups who are associated with, and have an interest in, postgraduate education. 

What Do Graduates Do?

Published annually, What Do Graduates Do? uses statistics drawn from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey (DLHE), which is conducted by every university in the UK each year to try and establish what every graduate is doing six months after graduation. What Do Graduates Do? is the result of a close collaboration between AGCAS and Prospects, on behalf of the Higher Education Careers Service Unit (HECSU).

Key findings from the lastest edition of What do Graduates Do? (2017) shows that the graduate unemployment rate is at its lowest since 1989. 

The impact of part-time learning two years after graduation

This Futuretrack report presents findings from a follow-up survey conducted in 2010/11 of 1,021 part-time students who were originally surveyed in 2007/08 when they were in their final year of undergraduate study. The report examines how these students progressed in the two years following the original interviews, and asks what qualifications they achieved, whether they went on to further study, and what impact their course had on their career development.

The report can also be used with undergraduate and taught postgraduates considering a research degree as their next option.
