Trainee teachers with disabilities on the rise
The number of people with disabilities training to become teachers has increased for the fifth year running, according to new research by Durham University. Survey results also show an increasing diversity in the types of people entering the teaching profession.

The AGCAS Teaching and Related Professions Task Group is seeking a new member. If you would like to develop your knowledge of teacher training, recruitment and careers in the education sector, why not consider joining? You don't need to be a careers adviser and you don't need to be an 'education expert'. However, you do need enthusiasm and a desire to contribute, and some knowledge of teacher training and the variety of roles in the education sector would be a distinct advantage.




Single admissions process for postgraduate initial teacher training (ITT): Consultation

The Department for Education announced in its Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Implementation Plan published last November that it would introduce a single application system for postgraduate teacher training courses, rather than having different systems for different training routes. The improved system is due to be operational from September 2013 for courses starting in 2014. The Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR) has now launched a consultation on a new model to create this single admissions process.

National Teaching Fellowship Scheme 2013

The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) is now open. The NTFS recognises and rewards excellent learning and teaching. It is open to all higher education (HE) institutions and further education (FE) colleges with more than 100 FTE students in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.




AGCAS announces official partnership with GTI Media

AGCAS, the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, the voice of HE careers and employability professionals, is delighted to announce that, with immediate effect, it will be working with GTI Media, publishers of TARGETjobs, TARGETjobs Events and TARGETcourses in the UK, to deliver key careers information to undergraduates, postgraduates and recent graduates.

Update on teaching in the further education sector

In June 2014, Alison Proudlove, Careers and Employability Adviser at Manchester Metropolitan University and AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) for the Institute for Learning (IfL), met with representatives from the Education and Training Foundation and the IfL to discuss further education (FE) teaching. Alison put questions from AGCAS to the group and has produced a report on the discussion.

AGCAS Executive Director update: strategy and policy work (June 2016)

As I write, I know many members are still adjusting to the period of uncertainty and change that we are now entering. As careers professionals, I also know that members' focus will be on supporting and advising students and graduates during this period of transition. Following consultation with AGCAS heads of service, the AGCAS Board has published its response to the AGCAS referendum.




ALO update on teaching in the FE sector

In June 2016, Alison Proudlove, AGCAS Liaison Officer (ALO) for The Education & Training Foundation (ETF), met with a representative from the ETF to discuss further education (FE) teaching. Alison has since produced a detailed report giving an update on developments in the sector.

This one day event looks at how the delivery of postgraduate initial teacher training has undergone substantial change since 2012-13. We have seen a government-led move towards a more school-centric approach in which growing numbers of schools lead on recruitment and the delivery of training and the emergence of additional specialist routes into teaching.  These sit alongside existing University-led PGCE programmes and more established direct entry routes via Teach First and in the independent sector.
